8 Christmas Stories You’ll Love Reading With Your Family

Our family loves reading Christmas stories. Our tradition is to buy a new (to us) Christmas book each year, and read several books on Christmas Eve. And we serve Egg Nog during our story time. YUM!

Some of our favorites are listed down below, and maybe they will become your family favorites, too. I’ve included links to Amazon so you can read about the books, and possibly get a glimpse inside.

1. The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado with Jenna, Andrea, & Sara Lucado
Such a beautiful story, and shows how we all have great value.

2. Alabaster’s Song: Christmas through the Eyes of an Angel by Max Lucado
“It wath wonderful.” Alabaster is a sweet little angel missing his two front teeth. The kids love his lisp, and the story is delightful.

3. Piper’s Night Before Christmas by Mark Lowry & Martha Bolton
I first learned about Mark Lowry through his comedy, so I couldn’t resist this book about a hyper mouse named Piper, who learns all about the real meaning of Christmas.

4. The City That Forgot About Christmas by Mary Warren
The city had forgotten all about Christmas until the stranger came to town, an old man named Matthew. This is actually the book I owned as a child, and I love that I can share this story with my own kids now.

5. The Baby who Changed the World by Sheryl Ann Crawford
This one makes you get into character a bit as you read the different animal voices. This is all about Jesus’ birth – from the animal’s perspective. Another fun story.

6. The Candle in the Window by Grace Johnson
Gunther is a cobbler who has lost all hope and joy…until a woman and her two children show up one night at his store. A little long, but a wonderful story.

7. The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore
Everyone knows this story, but who can resist reading it on Christmas Eve? Not me!

8. Christopher Pop-In-Kins (Book One) by Flora Johnson
This book comes with an adorable Elf named Christopher. Christopher goes to Santa one day, and tells him how much he wants to see the children like Santa gets to. Santa thinks this is a great idea, and sends him out to children’s homes. I’m not going to give away more of the story, but we’ve had so much fun moving Christopher around each night, and sometimes during the day. Sometimes he hides, and other times he’s doing something like eating chocolate or climbing the garland.

I know the Elf on the Shelf has become popular, but I wasn’t a fan of his appearance or the story about reporting back to Santa on how the kids behave. But I loved the fun idea of hiding him, and having him do things. So imagine my delight when I found sweet Christopher. Oh, and I totally have an alarm set on my iPhone, so I can remember to move him. Even my older kids and my hubby have gotten into finding places to hide him.

BONUS BOOK MENTION:
God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergren
How could I forget this sweet little book. We love this series. In this story, Papa Bear stays home with the baby cubs while Mama Bear heads out with Little Cub to show him how God gave us Christmas.
