Artists & Authors is a cute little book combining character lessons with drawing prompts. It covers 42 weeks with each week tackling a different character trait, the 10 Commandments, Fruit of the Spirit, a holiday or a part of the Westminster Shorter Catechism.
We haven’t had a chance to use our copy of Artists & Authors yet because we have been out of town at a family reunion. We had an AMAZING time, and I hope to post photos soon. Okay, back to the review. I showed the book to my kids, read some of the ideas to them, and gauged their interest levels.
Kid interest: Amber and Jake are in the target range (ages 4-10), and both would like to do this. Christian is 13, and likewise, is interested in doing the book. Chrystiana, 16, thought it was cute, but a little young for her. I can see her helping the younger ones as needed. This is pretty much the reactions I expected.
Initial reactions: some of the drawing prompts seem random compared to the topic covered, so don’t expect them to match up each time. It’s more like a mini lesson AND a drawing prompt rather than a mini lesson WITH a drawing prompt. If that makes sense. Regardless, three of my kids are looking forward to this.
How I plan to use it: One book + three kids = a solution needed. Rather than buy more books, I plan to buy three small sketchbooks. Sometimes one child will be waiting on me while I’m working with another one, so this will be the perfect thing to pull out and work on. I’ll read and discuss the mini lesson with all of them at once, and then they can work on their drawing prompts on their own. Using the book with sketchbooks will allow my kids to go back through the book at a later time making it a resource that will last. I think they will also enjoy comparing future and past drawings.
Overall Impression: I think this book will be a fun addition to our homeschooling this year. I’m looking forward to seeing what the kids draw and discussing the topics presented as we go through the book.
Where to buy it: Artists and Authors is available on Lorrie Flem’s website, Eternal Encouragement. She also has one called Authors & Artists which follows the same idea only with writing prompts instead.
A chance to win: Lorrie is hosting giveaways on her blog! You have the chance to win Authors and Artists as well as Artists and Authors. Be sure to enter both. Here’s hoping one of my readers wins!
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book to review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations. You can read my full disclosure policy here.

I really like the idea of small sketch books for each child! Simple yet a great way for each to keep their own drawings with the option to add more drawings.
