I’ve recently gotten into running, so I find myself wearing ponytails a little more often these days. But who wants to wear ordinary hair ties? I’ve got cute running gear, so it’s only natural I’d like a cute hair tie to go with it. Right? Right.
Pinterest came through for me once again. I love these hair ties, and they are so simple to make. Who knew there were so many fun elastics out there? Not me. I can’t wait to find even more styles, colors, and patterns. I think I may be slightly addicted.
I found my elastic at JoAnn’s, but I’m hoping to scout out some sources online soon. I absolutely adore the ruffled elastic, and the colors are gorgeous. Rich and vibrant.
4 Easy Steps
1. Cut your elastic to size. I recommend you cut one, tie it, and then test it out because the thickness of your ponytail comes into play a bit. 9″ is perfect for my daughter who has thicker hair. 8-8 1/2″ for thinner hair. If you have super thick hair, you might want to go up to 9 1/2 or 10″.
2. Fold it in half with the right side out.
3. Tie a knot close to the end, but leave a little tail.
4. Carefully put the ends near a flame to singe them so they don’t fray. Or you might be able to add a little fray check (I think that’s the name of it). This is optional. You might like the shabby chick frays.
That’s it! Super simple. The trend is to either wear it on your wrist or in your hair. How many of you have worn a hair tie on your wrist in case you need it? Well, now it’s stylish and trendy. Again, I recommend you make one, test it out, and adjust according to the size of your pony tail. Such an easy way to add a little sass to your pony tails.
Tip: Take the scraps, and make little ones for partial pony tails, braids or little kids. Aren’t they cute?
Plus, your kids can use them to create art pieces as a quiet time activity. See how wonderfully versatile these things can be? I love multi-purpose items.
I also picked up wider elastic, and thought these would be perfect for headbands. I should be able to make a set for me, and a matching set for my youngest daughter. I’m sure there will be a tutorial sometime for these, too.
