Two weeks ago, I shared 16 Cool Summer Reads for Boys. Today, my daughters and I are going to share a variety of book ideas for girls (the boys would like a few of these). Make sure you check out the boys list because girls would love to read most of those, too.
So in no particular order, and with a wide range of ages covered, let’s dive into the girls list. Again, I’m linking to Amazon so you can read the blurbs and reviews. Here we go:
Rosie and Scamper (Sonrise Stable series) by Vicki Watson. You can watch my video review here.
A Little Book of Manners: Courtesy & Kindness for Young Ladies by Emilie Barnes
Mary Poppins series by Dr. P.L. Travers
Life with Lily (The Adventures of Lily Lapp series) by Suzanne Woods Fisher & Mary Ann Kinsinger. You can read my review here.
Little House in the Big Woods (series) by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Little Women (and other books by author) by Louisa May Alcott
God’s Promises for Girls by Jack Countryman and Amy Parker
The Black Stallion (Black Stallion series) by Walter Farley
Hopscotch The Tiny Bunny by Stephanie Calmenson
Annie of Green Gables (series) by L.M. Montgomery (classic)
God’s Wisdom for Little Girls: Virtues and Fun from Proverbs 31 by Elizabeth George
Five on Treasure Island (Famous Five series) by Enid Blyton
Misty of Chincoteague and others by Marguerite Henry
Angus and Sadie by Cynthia Voigt
DragonSpell (Dragon Keepers Chronicles, Book 1) by Donita K. Paul (Christian series)
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin
**Quick note: I have no idea if the ones I linked to are abridged or not. I would recommend checking into that for the classics if it’s important to you.
Do you have any book ideas for girls? We are always needing more book ideas here at our house.
Laura @ Pruning Princesses says
I am not familiar with a few of these books but most of them make classic book list regularly. My girls did not like the Mary Poppins series. My daughters love L’Engle’s Wrinkle in Time series and also Wind in the Willows. AS for contemporary fiction series, Nancy Rue is my go to author. I wrote about her series here(http://www.pruningprincesses.com/book-series-for-tween-girls/) and about books to broaden their world-these are generally not Christian– here (http://www.pruningprincesses.com/when-you-wish-to-broaden-her-view-of-the-world-a-list-of-books/) Now to go check out Dragon spell!

I’ll have to check out the books you mentioned. Thanks for the ideas, Laura. π
Mrs. Sarah Coller says
Selah’s favorite book in the whole world is Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. Lynzie’s favorite is…The Door Within series, The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge (I read this…LOVED IT—almost as much as Jane Eyre!!!), hmmm…she has a million favorites. All of Jane Austen’s books are appropriate for teens and Jane Eyre is good for an older teen (like 15 or so). Oh, Lynz likes The Wrinkle In Time series and the Narnia series. I always liked Nancy Drew. π

I forgot about the Nancy Drew series . . . I didn’t read them as a child, but one of my friends LOVES them! What age or grade level are they appropriate for? Thanks a bunch!
Audra Marie says
Oh, thanks for more new ones to add to my list, Sarah. π
Tracey M. says
I saw a few book titles that I will have to reserve for when my daughter gets older. Thanks for sharing your book suggestions. I need to find a copy of the Little Book of Manners and I was interested in the Life with Lily series as well. My reading list for girls is posted at http://totplay.blogspot.com/2013/07/popular-chapter-books-for-girls.html. Stop by and say hi if you get a chance.

It’s so fun watching your kids read the books you loved as a child. Thanks for visiting, Erin. π
Jessica says
My boys also loved the Dragon Quest book!
Audra Marie says
I haven’t read that series, Jessica, but I did read the Dragons in Their Midst series listed on the boys summer reading ideas post. Loved it. My kids say I need to read this one, too. π

Oh YAY!! Thank you, Sarah. I need to add your feature button. π

Love your list! I would have to add a few of my daughters’ favorites. We love our friends from Beverly Cleary – Henry Huggins and his dog, Ribsy, Beezus and her fiesty, good hearted sister, Ramona, and Socks the cat. Also, if you’re looking for an alternative to Junie B. Jones, we highly recommend the Clementine books. Clementine is in 3rd grade and has a heart of gold, although she often has difficulty using good judgement (like the time her friend cut her own hair and Clementine decided to use green marker to color in the bald spots, thinking that would make it look just fine). She is clever and funny and inquisitive. As a mom, I love that she speaks properly, unlike Junie B. Jones.
Audra Marie says
Thanks so much for the ideas, Elise. I’ll have to make a list and head to the library. π
Marcy @ Ben and Me says
I’ve read many of these books myself. Wish I had a girl to share them with, although my boy has read a few of them!

There are definitely some that appeal to the boys on here, Marcy. π
Diane says
We truly loved Little House on the Prairie Series, Anne of Green Gables, and Little Women. If you can believe this I didn’t read any of these as a child. It was so meaningful to share them as read alouds with my daughter through the years.
Blessings
Diane

There are some I’m surprised I didn’t read as a child, too, Diane. At least I can read them to my daughters now lol. π
