Gratitude is something I keep coming back to. It’s something to be cultivated. Practiced. Nurtured. Lorrie Flem from Eternal Encouragement Magazine discusses expressing gratitude, how to go about it, and why it’s so important in her three part audio series. Our children need to see this modeled in us with consistency from day to day. They need to see what the bible means when it says, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5:18.
This doesn’t mean we have to thank Him FOR all circumstances, but IN them. If I’m sick, I can thank Him for my healing, or for not being sick often, or for not being worse. There is always something to be grateful for each day.
But what if I’m not feeling grateful? Do it anyway. Sometimes choosing to be thankful is a matter of the will which will often lead to a matter of the heart.
Lorrie reminds us to be open and generous in our gratefulness. It blesses others when we express our thanks to them. Teach your children to do the same.
I needed this reminder to be more thankful, and to nurture this in my children. I bought a journal a while back, and plan to start adding entries to it during our family bible time in the evenings. Writers can add their own entries to the page, but the younger ones can dictate to one of the writers. This will help us to remember to be thankful on a daily basis. I imagine this will become something beautiful as we look back over our thankfulness journal.
I also want to help the children work on choosing thankfulness as we go about our day. Sometimes ungratefulness can center in our hearts, and blind us to all our blessings. I want to focus on opening our eyes to this, and changing it around when it happens.
