Recon is a wonderful tool for grounding young adults in a Christian worldview. Designed for grades 11 & 12, Recon’s goal is to spiritually equip students before they head off to college, and encourages them to join with other Recon graduates and believers while in college. Accountability is a huge benefit to holding strong in faith.
College students and adults will also find their faith strengthened from this course. I believe the best scenario with this course is for a group to go through it together with an adult facilitating, but one on one with your student will work just fine, too.
The Teacher’s Manual has over 400 pages containing everything you need to teach this course. The lesson plans are easy to follow allowing you to dig into the message with your student. You’ll find copies of the student pages plus the answers are highlighted so you can easily find them. Charts, graphs and illustrations can be found throughout the pages.
The Student Workbook contains 160 pages of fill in the blanks plus activities to train them to dig deeper such as exploring web resources or using tools such as a bible dictionary.
There are 72 lessons which can be broken down into four lessons per week for 18 weeks or two lessons a week for 36 weeks. It’s strongly recommended to not drop below two lessons per week. A slower pace would dilute the effectiveness of the lessons whereas keeping a steady pace will have a stronger impact on the student.
Some of the topics covered in this curriculum are discipleship, walking in the Spirit, evangelism, worldview, materialism, Pantheism, and so much more. It’s a deep study designed to equip your student to be ready to stand strong in their walk with the Lord.
How we use this:
My daughter and I meet together, and she shares what she wants from the previous lesson’s ‘homework’. Then I present the current lesson looking things up in the bible or on the web as we go. I then have her fill out her worksheet by looking through the teacher’s manual for the answers in the text. This way she hears it, and then looks through the text herself. I feel it gives the information a chance to sink in a little more. Then she does her ‘homework’. Rinse, lather, repeat.
I love the military theme, and the sense of being strong in our faith walk to reach our neighbors, share the gospel, and overcome our flesh. The tone set by Recon is designed to keep the focus on the serious responsibility Christians have when it comes to God matters.
The print versions are available through Lulu. The Teacher’s Manual costs $21.95, and the Student Workbook costs $12.99.
On the Recon website, you’ll find additional resources such as devotionals, quotes, links, and other helps. I highly recommend this curriculum to help prepare your student for college, and adulthood.
