Ten Girls From History (Review)

Growing up, I had to chew on dry history snippets crammed into textbooks. Boring. Dull. Lifeless. I hated history. Yet, when I read books set in the past, or went to see reenactments, or touched items from long ago, a passion stirred. I loved history!

As a homeschool mama, I am thankful for companies that bring history alive. Golden Prairie Press is one such company. Amy Puetz (pronounced Pitts) has some wonderful history resources. One of those is Ten Girls From History.

Ten Girls From History was originally written in 1917 by Kate Dickinson Sweetser. Amy Puetz edited the book for today’s audience while preserving the original feel of the book. Each story gives you a taste of their lives, and leaves you wanting to read more about your favorite girls or young women.

My daughter (16) and I enjoyed the stories. A couple were a little slow, but still interesting enough. Some of my favorites are Molly Pitcher, Madeleine De Vercheres, and Ida Lewis. We both agreed that some of these women had sad endings to their lives, and we sort of wished we didn’t know. Overall, we’re glad we read about them. My son (13) is still reading, and has enjoyed some of the stories more than others.
