Sometimes we mamas yell, and then feel guilty, and we vow to not yell again. And then we yell, and we feel guilty…such a vicious cycle. I have a strong desire to answer my kids with love in my voice, instead of irritation. But I fail. Time and time again. It’s something I’ve had on my mind a lot this year, and I am determined to change the habit.
This month, we were asked to review Yelling: The Cause, The Casualty, and The Cure by Lorrie Flem. In the book, Lorrie discusses why we yell, gives eleven steps to combat a habit of yelling, and weaves in lots of encouragement. She shares snippets from other moms struggling in this area. It’s nice to know I’m not alone.
I told my daughter when I finished that it didn’t work – in jest of course. Now, if I choose only to read this, and not apply any of it, well, it won’t work. Instead, I will go back through and take each step one at a time. Some steps will require making changes, taking action, while others will simply be a matter of prayer and consideration. A little pondering.
I know this is an area of sin in my life. It’s rooted in selfishness really. I want to dig it out, and toss it from me. I know I can retrain myself to answer with a soft voice – even if the situation merits anger. Don’t get me wrong, anger is not a sin. Yelling at my kids, not guarding what I say in the heat of the moment – that is sin. It’s ugly. It wounds. I don’t want it.
Thankfully, neither does the Lord. And I know He will help me overcome, and make a change. Yelling: The Cause, The Casualty, and The Cure not only reminded me of why I want to tackle this, but also gave me some sound tips to employ. I love how review books will sometimes be exactly what I need to ‘hear’.
Want to read this book yourself? It will be free to download for your Kindle on July 24th only. Don’t have a Kindle? No worries, you can download a free Kindle app for your PC from Amazon.
There will also be a Facebook party to celebrate the release of Lorrie’s Kindle book.
